Five Indian high school girls are ready to take Silicon Valley by storm. The Tech Witches team from Amity International School, Noida, are among the finalists at Technovation Girls, an annual competition inviting girls aged between 10 and 18 to identify a problem in their community and create a mobile app to solve it. The Indian team comprising five girls – 17-year-old Ananya Grover, 18-year-old Anushka Sharma, 17-year-old Arefa, 16-year-old Vanshika Yadav and 17-year-old Vasudha Sudhinder – created an app, Maitri, that connects children at orphanages to senior citizens in old-age homes, allowing them to spend time together. Congressman Joe Neguse announced Tuesday that his office will hold a congressional app challenge for middle and high school students throughout the 2nd District. Designed to encourage student participation in computer science and coding, the challenge will be open to students of all skill levels for the next 12 weeks. Participants can choose to code a unique app individually or in teams of up to four participants. The competition will accept computer programs written in any programming language for any platform. The deadline to register  for the challenge is Sept. 10 and app submissions are due by Nov. 1. Those interested can register at CongressionalAppChallenge.us . The bootcamp was officially launched on Thursday, although the learning process had commenced earlier on Monday August 5 th . Officials of Africell said the program targets a total of 180 pupils, 30 each from the three categories. The first set of 90 pupils started on Monday and their session will last until after two weeks, before the second set of 90 commences learning. Bailor Jalloh, Human Resource Manager of Africell, told Politico following the launch that the application to participate was open to the public for everyone to have the opportunity to apply online or through paper base application. The budget is far more than a massive spreadsheet—it outlined multiple changes that will impact K-12 education. Examples include raising the base salary for teachers to $30,000 per year, creating a school safety tip line, designating funding for developing drug prevention curriculum and establishing a new set of requirements for high school graduation.
