U.S. Rep. Neguse announces coding competition for middle and high school students – Boulder Daily Camera
Congressman Joe Neguse announced Tuesday that his office will hold a congressional app challenge for middle and high school students throughout the 2nd District.
Designed to encourage student participation in computer science and coding, the challenge will be open to students of all skill levels for the next 12 weeks.
Participants can choose to code a unique app individually or in teams of up to four participants. The competition will accept computer programs written in any programming language for any platform. The deadline to register for the challenge is Sept. 10 and app submissions are due by Nov. 1. Those interested can register at CongressionalAppChallenge.us. The winner’s app will be recognized by Neguse and may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for a year.
“I am incredibly excited to host a districtwide app challenge to showcase our students’ drive, intelligence and creativity,” Neguse said. “This competition is an excellent way to encourage computer science and STEM skills that are essential for economic innovation and growth in the future.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, programming firms will be unable to fulfill 1 million jobs by the year 2020, the median annual wage for which is $84,000.
