It’s no surprise that the kids in Stranger Things spend a lot of time in the Arcade in Hawkins. It’s even where they meet one of their new best friends, Max; she might be the best video game player the town has ever seen! In this camp, attendees will be told that Hawkins is putting in a new arcade, and they will get to be the ones to design the games to fill it. First they need to learn how: students will put a “Stranger” twist on the games, design their sprites after characters and creatures from the show, and do so through in-world inspired storylines. In the end, they will have a game based on the show that possibly even Mad Max can’t beat. This camp is designed for students 12-17 years of age. In this free, Sunday camp series students eight and above learn to make and then hack “spells” with the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit wand. Be a citizen scientist and study monarch butterflies in LICM’s Milkweed Garden. By measuring plants, rainfall and monarch eggs you will be collecting real data that scientists at the University of Minnesota Monarch Lab can analyze! By the end of the workshop, students will be able to: Create a list of coding instructions, Instruct a computer to perform tasks in a sequence, and Test and refine their coding instructions to uncover hidden underwater treasure. The International Center of Photography and Southampton Arts Center are thrilled to co-present the National Geographic Photo Ark exhibition, featuring the compelling and visually stunning work of National Geographic photographer and Fellow Joel Sartore. The exhibition will highlight Sartore’s images from his work in more than 250 zoos, aquariums, and animal rescue centers around the world. Founded by Sartore in 2006, the National Geographic Photo Ark aims to document event species living in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, inspire action through education, and help save wildlife by supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts. National Geographic is showcasing this important project through multiple platforms, including this exhibition, to inspire people not just to care, but also to help protect these animals for future generations. In addition to creating an archival record for generations to come, this project is a hopeful platform for conservation and shines a light on individuals and organizations working to preserve species around the world.

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium Presents: Looking Back, Looking Ahead – Cold Spring Harbor Library

An art exhibit of paintings by Hatchery staffer, Diane Lundegaard is being held at the Cold Spring Harbor Library & Environmental Center. A donation of proceeds goes to the Hatchery’s new Turtle Pond Exhibit.
